Dog + snow = LOVE

We've gotten several many inches of snow over the past few days (18", according to our local news, and the high -- high!! -- yesterday was 12 degrees), and the puppy is ecstatic. Here she is doing her "I am a snow gopher!!" impression:

How adorable! What kind of dog is she? We finally got more than just ground cover here over the past weekend and last few days. Probably at least 6". It's looking like it will be a white Christmas!

She's an English mastiff -- big dog! She actually looks almost small here, but she's about 30" tall at the shoulder and weighs 165 pounds (her dad was 35" and 245, yikes!) Mastiffs usually have a short, smooth coat but she got the recessive gene for a long coat, so she often gets mistaken for a Leonberger. She's the sweetest, most affectionate (*cough*needy*cough) dog ever :)

Is that the same as a Bull Mastiff? My son and DIL just got a Bull Mastiff puppy this fall, she's going to be a big girl I think. She's only six or seven months old and B told me the other day she's like 70 pounds already. We visited in Oct and from seeing pictures I can't believe how much she's grown in just 10 weeks! She has the short smooth coat though rather than longer hair.

A bull mastiff is a cross between an English mastiff and an Old English bulldog. So they're related, and they can look really similar, but they're not the same. Bull mastiffs tend to be somewhat smaller -- "small" being a relative term of course lol! It's funny how small some dogs look to us that used to look big, like German shepherds or St. Bernards :)
