I know what you mean. We have quite a huge collection too. I think we're up to around 4000 -- Terry Pratchett alone accounts for about 40 of them lol! -- but I haven't counted in a while.

But I do sometimes end up with duplicates, or I read and enjoy a book but know that I won't want to re-read it, and for those I don't mind getting rid of them if they're going to a good home. (I could NEVER just throw them out!!)
