Star Trek -- %&^&$ awesome!!
9 May 2009 03:38 pmSaw the new Star Trek movie yesterday -- w00t!!!! We walked out and almost turned right around and bought tickets to see it again (well, OK, it was mostly me that wanted to do that). Amazing, terrific, fantabulous, <insert superlative here>. Nicely done homages to various elements of the original series scattered throughout; all the characters got to say their classic lines; the younger versions did a great job evoking their older selves without descending into caricature or parody. They did sex it up a bit (young Kirk gets caught in bed with Uhura's roommate); I hope when (not if, but when) they do the next one they don't reduce it to a typical explosions-and-sex flick, like Mission:Impossible for example. All in all they did a great job capturing the essence of the original without slavishly rehashing it. Props to J.J. and the gang, and here's hoping we've got a whole new generation of Star Trek lovers :)
On that note, I had to laugh on the way out when I overheard a young nerd behind us saying to his friends, "...well yeah of COURSE my Mom will like it, it's Star Trek. But now it's like, her whole Star Trek experience, all those episodes never happened..." I wanted to clout him on the ear and say, "Idiot child, can you not hold more than one universe in your head?!"
