Apparently, unless his Secret Service can somehow argue him out of it, our Dear Leader is going to be attending the giant military meeting at Quantico and address all the officers.

Jesus H. Particular Christ on a pogo stick.

Now it really IS the ENTIRE chain of command, several layers deep, in ONE location. Less than a week's notice for a Presidential visit, and barely a week for the whole gathering.

There are SO many ways this can go wrong, even ignoring the "why the hell are they even HAVING this meeting" speculation.

Writing and chatting

I had the alarm set for 10:00 but I didn't actually get up until 11:00. I kept pushing the snooze button. Finally got up and had breakfast and coffee, then called [personal profile] mashfanficchick to see if we were getting together today. No, ze was just watching the end of the baseball season, so instead I went to the Starsky and Hutch creative work session on Zoom.

I got some writing done on the story I'm working on, and had a lot of fun chatting. Major topic of discussion was stuff about the con of course, another recap after yesterdays discussion.

So for those who don't know, I crossspost this journal in both Dreamwidth and Livejournal. Livejournal has really stagnated over the last few years, but someone has started a community to revive it. Basically a friending community. So I joined up and posted today. I got some new friends out of it, hello everyone, and I hope that LJ can be revived a bit.

Anyway, I did that during the breaks when we were not chatting. And I also got a new friend on DW, so hello also.

After we finished the Zoom session at 5:30 I puttered online, until 7:00 when I Teamed the FWiB. We talked for about an hour and a half, which was nice.

Then I called Middle Brother. Nothing new with him, except he's looking forward to Columbus Day and Halloween.

After that I had dinner, and then went to the bedroom where I meant to read the zine I've been reading but ended up playing solitaire on my phone and scrolling Facebook.

At pet feeding time I came out and fed the pets, and here I am.

Oh, disturbing news of the day, a woman's body was found in the water at MacNeil Park, the one I call the big park in College Point. I hope that, sad as it would be, she was a suicide, because a murder would be too upsetting there where I have so much emotional history, and an accident doesn't seem very likely.

Anyway, that's all for tonight. After this, go read that zine before bed.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Made new friends.

3. Middle Brother is fine.

4. Starsky and Hutch fandom.

5. Got some writing done.

6. My pets.

We are 24 hours into tag approving! We began with 6078 individual fandom nominations to sort (where if two people submitted the same fandom, that would count twice towards the total). We have 3687 fandom nominations still to sort. Please review the questions below to help us sort them quickly and correctly!

Please link your nominations page if telling us what to do about your nomination - thank you! Please either sign in to comment, or include a name with your anonymous comments, including replies to others' comments. Unsigned comments will stay screened.

If we've processed any of your nominations and something doesn't look right, please comment (with your nominations page) to tell us about the problem and how you think it should be corrected. Questions are welcome.

Aliens (1986) - These characters are also nominated under the broader fandom Alien (Original Movies 1979-1997), so we would like to merge your nominations in with the rest of the original movies.

Bibi Blocksberg (2002) - Nominator, do you specifically only want the first movie, or may we approve this as the canonical Bibi Blocksberg (Movies 2002 2004)? Please link your nominations page when you reply.

Book of Night - Holly Black - We also have evidence for this fandom as the Charlatan Duology, and another participant has nominated it under that name. We’d like to combine your nominations, but please get us in touch if there’s a reason that won’t work. Please link your nominations page when you reply.

Clocktaur War Series - T. Kingfisher, Swordheart - T. Kingfisher, Temple of the White Rat Universe - T. Kingfisher, The Saint of Steel - T. Kingfisher - We have some overlap in these nominations. The fandom as a whole is eligible, so we could combine them under Temple of the White Rat Universe, or the Temple of the White Rat Universe nominator could have their characters split into the other fandoms if you are willing to do that. Please comment with a link to your nominations to help us sort this out!

Cousin Bette - Honoré de Balzac - Nominator, you may see some oddities as we get this set up separately from La Comédie Humaine. Pardon our dust, and hopefully you’re used to it by now! Let us know if anything looks wrong when the final tagset is released.

Designing Women - Nominator, please email us (see contact information in the footer).

Dragonfly - Ursula K. Le Guin, Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin, The Tombs of Atuan - Ursula K. Le Guin - Our understanding is that these are all in the same continuity. We are planning to combine Earthsea and Tombs of Atuan, especially as there is character overlap in those nominations. Dragonfly nominator, do you have concerns with folding that nomination into Earthsea as well? If so, we would appreciate help understanding exactly what you’re looking for and how to differentiate the larger Earthsea universe.

Enchanted Forest Chronicles - Patricia Wrede - We won’t approve the character nomination Morwen's Cats (Enchanted Forest) as they are all individually named. Nominators, could you please each choose a cat? (Scorn has already been nominated.) Please link your nominations page when you reply.

MAIJO Otaro - Works - We don’t approve fandoms consisting of all of a creator’s works, and the nominated characters appear to come from at least 2 novels. Nominator, could you pick one of Maijō’s works to nominate, along with the associated characters? Please link your nominations page when you reply.

夢中さ きみに。| Muchuu sa Kimi ni (Manga) - We also have a nomination for the Anime; the nominator of that fandom says they have not read the manga but believes these could be combined if needed. Does the Manga nominator have a preference? Please link your nominations page when you reply. ETA: sorry, we have 3 manga nominators and have heard from 2, so it would be great to hear from the third!

Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Nominator, please email us (see contact information in the footer).

Nescafe Advertisment - While this is a canonical fandom on AO3, it’s under review to be renamed, so we’ll approve this as Nescafe "Arctica" | "Polar Explorers" Advertisments (Russia) which is the likely new name. However, we’d like more information on the characters. We’re not sure which of the men is “First Polar” and which is “Second Polar”; some works in the fandom use Ivanov and Petrov. Also, we haven’t seen a polar bear in the 3 ads we’ve found - can you link us to the one that has the polar bear, please?

老洞 | The Old Miao Myth (TV) - Nominator, for the character Jin Bong, are you looking for Chin Pong? We’ve checked several sources and want to confirm whether this is a romanization issue or something else.

Outcast (Video Game series) - this has been nominated with character 'Any' and no other characters. If you mean you are interested in any characters, we will approve this without characters, but we wanted to check just in case there is a character actually named Any. Please link your nominations page when you reply.

Phantom of the Paradise (1974) - Nominator, please email us (see contact information in the footer).

Prophet - Sin Blaché & Helen Macdonald - could we please get more information about 'Prophet' as a character (aside from being the title)?

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (2025) - Nominator, please email us (see contact information in the footer)

Tennis RPF - We have separate nominations for 2020's Men's Tennis RPF (characters: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Terence Atmane) and 2025 Grand Slam Season (Tennis) RPF (characters: Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner) - may we combine these under the former fandom name? Please link your nominations page when you reply.

Ack it's been a while I know! I keep thinking about longer posts to make and such and then I just end up putting it off or getting distracted. Silksong is so good! It's so big, I'm like 85 hours into it and I'm still not done, I'm still finding new stuff all the time. Right now I'm trying to find the entrance to a temple and I'm having trouble with it, but I could've just been tired at the time, haha. I'd go and pick it back up but I'm actually in Greece right now for a destination wedding! I didn't bring my controller with me but I did bring my laptop. |D I figured if I was going to be on my computer here at least I should be writing lol. I do want to do some work on the first draft of the next Vargas chapter, but I also want to do some work on the Kabu stalker fic I'm working on... and I had an idea for a fic where Kabu teaches Larry how to swim floating around in my head for a while.

And the Frozen/Ace Attorney AU! I finally finished The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles on the flight here, after taking way way too long lol. I enjoyed it a lot! It deals a lot with cultural mismatches and clashes between Britain and Japan and I really liked all the characters a lot, even if I'll never get used to Herlock Sholmes instead of Sherlock Holmes, haha. Speaking of, he's so much fun! He's so incredibly stupid sometimes and other times he's very crafty, which I guess does fit in with his canon origins, haha. So lame they couldn't just call him Sherlock in it.

I can definitely see why people were mad after the first one got released because it really is like half the story, you only get the full resolution in the second game, so I'm glad they released them together in English. It's a shame we probably won't get to see more of the cast's adventures! Thinking about the localization for it is interesting, since a lot of the flavor to it to me is the different British accents that show up in places. I remember Hato Moa talking about how the English localization was better than the original Japanese version because it was able to capture those nuances in English better than it could in Japanese, haha. There's huge differences in British accents that tell you a lot that are hard to convey in translation! And the localizers did a great job of it, I enjoyed all the Cockney rhyming slang and little quirks here and there, haha. Attention to detail! What was it, back in the day people used to get Britpickers to beta their Harry Potter fic for Americanisms and such, I wonder if people still do that? Woah tangent

Anyway it was really a fun localization, everyone had such a unique flavor to their text, I really wonder how it was conveyed in Japanese, if at all. The cultural intersection is SUCH a huge thing in the two games, and it's interesting to think that I'm coming to it from the English-speaking side, as opposed to the Japanese-speaking side who were the original intended audience. There are conversations at points about differences between Japanese and English - characters talking about how you'd translate "I love you" into Japanese, for example, which got into cultural differences where a Japanese person wouldn't state their feelings so clearly, and would say something a bit more subtle instead, like "the moon looks beautiful tonight, doesn't it?" It reminds me a bit of a part of the first Pokemon movie where Meowth and cloneMeowth are talking and he says talking about the moon at a time like that is tasteful, haha.

There was also a fun conversation about Kanji readings and names, like Shakespeare being shortened to Sao, and like Holmes wanting to know what his name would be in Japanese, and all stuff that's just like crack to me lol. I'M REALLY INTERESTED IN THIS KIND OF THING the language differences are so cool! All the small traits and such that reflect that language's culture! Loved having them talk about it and do cultural exchanges and talk about racism and prejudice and all that, it's just SO MUCH about the culture shock between the two, it's so much fun. It's crazy to think back to the first games and how they localized away as much of the Japanese flavor as they could, and now with this they just completely embrace it. So much time has passed, so much has changed...

Anyway the Great Ace Attorney is really good, I recommend it. Learned about a lot of weird taxes Britain had back in the day! Like a window tax and a paper tax. :O And a beard tax! While in Japan beards were outlawed, haha. Just fun things like that. Still wish they could've kept his name Sherlock though. Now I can finally look up Great Ace Attorney stuff without fear of spoilers! I actually managed to avoid almost all of them for TGAA even after all this time. :O

Man my eyes feel so bleary right now, I need to clean my glasses or something. I think it's just the exhaustion, haha. I should try to get some sleep...

Sunday Sweets: Gothic Elegance

Who says dark has to be dreary? These gorgeous Gothic cakes will have you cheering:

(By Sweet Lake Cakes)

Sweet Lake seems to specialize in Gothic designs, and I couldn't pick just one favorite!

(By Sweet Lake Cakes)

Look at that lace and "fabric" draping. INCREDIBLE.

One more:

(By Sweet Lake Cakes)

The bird skull cameo is the perfect touch.

And speaking of cameos, check out the raven head design on this little top hat:

(By Cake Central member ChrisJack1)

The feather, the hand painted skulls and swirls, the roses - just beautiful.

(By Candytuft Cakes)

It doesn't get much more classic than rich black and blood-red roses!

I really love the contrast of the white tiers under all this heavy scrollwork:

(Baker unknown. Anyone recognize it?)

WOW. The bottom tier looks like a wrought iron gate, and the second has architectural arch ways. The longer you look, the more detail you see!

On the other hand, sometimes simple can be just as dramatic:

(By Connie Cupcake)

Love.

Now welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion cake:

(By WDW's Contemporary Resort bakery, found here)

That wallpaper and perfect draping has this Dizgeek all atwitter, you guys. Great color on the roses, too!

(By Antonelli di Maria Torte & Design)

One of my personal favorites today; I can't believe that fabric draping, and the perfect color fade on the spider web!

(Baker unknown)

This purple practically glows, it's so vivid. If you look closely, you can see the layered acanthus leaves making up the second tier. Beautiful.

(By Cake Opera Company, featured here)

Another astounding, can't-believe-it's-cake design. That heavy embroidery is insanely intricate, and I've been so busy staring at the cake itself that I just now noticed the cake stand is wrapped in fur!

Ha!

And finally, arguably the simplest design of them all today, but I'm just so smitten with the unusual floral swag:

(By Artistic Bites)

This wedding cake was made for a "Red Riding Hood marries the Wolf" themed photo shoot. It's the perfect blend of dark elegance and fairy-tale whimsy, and I LOVE the succulents and fuzzy mosses they used on the cake.

Hope you enjoyed the Gothic Sweets, everyone! Happy Sunday!

Russet is out of town right now, she's up near Las Vegas at a fanfic gathering this weekend. I stayed home as I have to go to Phoenix in a few weeks to deal with some unpleasantness and didn't want to overly deprive the library of my glorious presence. Fortunately the gathering will rollover my membership from this year to next, so we'll save a little on that. ANYWAY, on Saturday nights normally they'll go out and see a movie if something fun is showing that's particularly fannish or slashy, and not much is out right now of that ilk. So they fired up Netflix and showed K-Pop Demon Hunters!

And since I also have Netflix.... I fired it up and watched it at pretty much the same time they were watching it two states away!

This is an animated movie that released theatrically a month or so ago. And it was a blast. A trio of young women (older teens?) are a pop group called Huntr/x that are hugely famous and popular. Secretly they are demon hunters, keeping Korea (and the world?) safe from the demon horde of Gwi-Ma as their songs reinforce a shield called the Honmoon. Gwi-Ma sends a boy band of demons - the Saja Boys - to interfere with Huntr/x and destroy their plans to finalize the seal of the Honmoon. Things go great, things go bad, total chaos - cats and dogs living together. Well, birds with hats and too many eyes and cat/tigers that look to me like they came from a Miyazaki film (very cool).

It was riotously funny, I was laughing out loud at it (but I have notoriously questionable taste). The music was great, and they did a fantastic job with the mix so that you could actually hear and understand the singing! They really played up the tropes of: girls instantly falling in love with boy band performers, automatic choreography and singing synchronization, etc. But you did actually get to see the girls rehearsing for an important performance.

I thought it was a lot of fun for a very silly, animated movie. Russet didn't care for it as much, saying (via text): "Well. That was. Something". If you're interested but hesitant, I'd suggest watching the four or so trailers that Netflix has with it. That should set your opinion firmly one way or another.

After the Secret

Hi Frank,

In 2012 when I was 16 years old, I was date-raped by my then boyfriend at a party. A story not altogether dissimilar to the secret you posted this week from a person who was assaulted by a friend and was considering suicide. It took me 2 years to realize what had happened to me and what that meant, despite it being painful and causing bleeding for weeks. My brain had hidden the memory deep inside to protect me.

In my secret I wrote to you in 2015 I said that I was mad at myself for taking so long to figure it out and that I couldn’t forgive myself. I was considering suicide and felt too much shame to tell anyone about what had happened to me. I felt weak and that I had let myself down. But I was lucky enough to find a supportive community and was eventually able to talk to a therapist about my experience. It took time and a lot of work to overcome the crippling PTSD I didn’t realize I was struggling with. But I DID make it!

These days, I don’t think about it and if I do, it no longer has any power over me. I have forgiven myself and now I have a wonderful partner who respects me and never makes me feel unsafe. Moving on wasn’t easy but it is SO worth it. EMDR saved my life and allowed me to see that I was in fact strong and that life was worth living.

I guess I just wanted them to know that they are not alone. Unfortunately 1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men in the US will experience sexual assault in their lifetimes. But, IT DOES GET BETTER! This is not your fault and that person was never really a friend at all. You deserve to be safe and loved. You are not tainted or ruined, you are so incredibly strong. I hope you are able to find the help you need and are able to give yourself grace. We are not victims, we are survivors.

Much love from one survivor to another,

J.

PS: If I submitted a secret today it would probably say something like, “I am not my past. I change everyday and I can’t wait to see who I become.”

I had a swathe of things I was hoping to do this morning, but each one I do takes longer than I was anticipating. One of the things I'm abandoning off the list is a well thought out blog post.

In other news,

Middlest is getting married.

At the Zoo.

In about 3 hours

And it is raining (it most likely won't be by then, but now I'm in a tizz about which trousers to wear to go with which jacket because I had not planned for 'dammit, I'll get cold'. I've already hemmed one pair of trousers, going to have to do another. very much appreciating magical hemming tape)

Revisiting the con

Got up this morning at 9:00 for my Al-anon meeting. Had breakfast and coffee, showered and dressed, and headed over.

Made the meeting early and helped set up. The meeting was good, but I didn't go to the diner afterwards. That's because instead of the regular diner trip to the Neptune diner, people were going to meet the son of a member who died last year and was in town now for I think the unveiling of her grave. I didn't know her well at all, in fact I'm not sure I could put a face to her name, so I didn't feel I should go.

So I went back home and got on the Starsky and Hutch chat, which today was a recap and discussion of SHarecon. It was very enjoyable. [personal profile] mashfanficchick was there, which was nice. And Flamingo was there to hear what we had to say.

We chatted until a little after 5:00, and then ended. After that I puttered online and as usual at 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB. This time Teams did not act up like last night and we had a good time til 8:30.

I had dinner and then went to the bedroom and went through my zines. Sadly I discovered that, of the freebies I brought home from the con, I already had two. I am either going to give them to [personal profile] mashfanficchick or, if ze doesn't want them, I'll hopefully be able to bring them to the next in-person SHarecon for the freebie table. Fingers crossed there will be a next one. We won't know for certain for about a year. But it looks hopeful.

Anyway, then I called [personal profile] mashfanficchick and talked a bit. Possibly I will see zer tomorrow, we shall see.

I played solitaire til pet feeding time, and then I fed the pets, and here I am.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. The Starsky and Hutch fandom.

4. It didn't rain until tonight.

5. Popsicles.

6. Zines.

Hello everyone!

I am writing a oneshot essentially set in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. My character is so surprised and overwhelmed by what he is seeing that I am introducing his senses one by one, but I couldnt quite imagine what it would smell like being in his position.

I know its quite humid, so thats probably the bulk of the experience, but are there any other, more subtle undertones I could include to make the scene feel more alive?
Even if you havent been to the exact location, any experience in a subtropical, humid climate would already be quite helpful.

Thank you!
