Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back!

How are we doing? I’m exhausted. It’s one of the weeks that has a lot in terms of work, social responsibilities, and holiday errands. I also have a hankering for banana pudding, which I haven’t had in probably over a decade.

What have you been craving lately?

Author and romance scholar Jodi McAlister is in People discussing the rise of audio erotica apps and how it taps into a certain kind of intimacy. Have you tried these?

If you like logic puzzles, may I suggest Murdle? They also have a book version, if you prefer to do these sorts of puzzles on paper. I mentioned them in the latest 2025 Holiday Gift Guide.

Bookpage listed their Best Books of 2025Rules of Ruin by Mimi Matthews made their top ten list! They also have separate lists by genre.

The latest hubbub in romance discourse is the profile of 831 Stories. Shoutout to my romance Slack group at the office for bringing this to my attention. They made a very good point that 831 Stories seems to denigrate romance while trying to be part of it.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Just Our Luck

Just Our Luck by Denise Williams is a KDD and is $1.99! This is a standalone romance with some fake dating. It released this spring.

A lottery ticket + donuts = love in this steamy new fake dating romance from beloved author Denise Williams.

Sybil Sweet has always been lucky, but lately she can’t catch a break. After years of bouncing from job to job in search of something that feels right and from man to man in search of something special, Sybil is worried that she’s the directionless, floundering daughter her family thinks she is. All she really wants now is a little financial stability and carb comfort. Lucky for her, she’s got just enough in the bank to buy a lottery ticket, and the late-night donut store is open.

Kieran Anderson put his dreams of becoming a doctor on hold to take over running his family’s bakery, and after fighting a losing battle to save the place, he’s exhausted, broke, and no closer to getting back to school. But when a whirlwind of a woman sweeps in late one night, flirty energy gives way to more…until she runs out the next morning, leaving behind her winning lottery ticket.

Lucky for Kieran, his attempt to return the ticket looks like a grand romantic gesture and goes viral, sending sales through the roof. In an effort to keep the store afloat and to convince Sybil’s family she can make good relationship choices, they agree to fake a relationship for three months. Even with hundreds of millions of dollars, finding each other might end up being the sweetest bit of luck for both of them.

The Wiener Across the Way

The Wiener Across the Way by Amy Award is $2.99 at Amazon and is another KDD! It’s book two in The Cocky Kingsman series, and the plot inspiration may sound familiar to many of you.

What happens when the sunshiny pop princess and the grumpy football player discover there’s more to this fake romance than inspiration for a new love song?

Kelsey Best is America’s pop sweetheart and anyone who says they don’t like her music is a liar and needs to be punched in the nads. And I’ll do it too, because I’m the guy the NFL dubbed the meanest player in the league. Great for my career on the field, not so much for my reputation off it.

So I’m shocked as hell when Kelsey’s team sends my agent a wild idea – they want a showmance between us. She’s looking to dodge the media frenzy after her breakup with Hollywood’s latest heartthrob, and I apparently fit the bill as her perfect distraction. My agent is convinced this fake dating stunt is the key to fixing my image. The whole world is going to hate me when we fake break up. And what happens when I fall for her? She’s going to create a blank space in my heart, and I don’t think I’m going to be able to shake it off.

This plus-size curvy girl romance has a burnt cinnamon roll hero with a mean protective streak and a baddie plus-size pop star who is on the verge of burn out. But a Bridgertons-meets-American-Football family you’ll wish you were a part of will make sure they get their happy ever after.

Forever Your Rogue

RECOMMENDED: Forever Your Rogue by Erin Langston is $1.99! This was one of Claudia’s favorite reads of 2023. She also alludes to a “clever epilogue.” Did any of you read this one?

“One of the most utterly gorgeous character transformations historical romance has offered up in some time.” – The New York Times

He was her last chance. She was his first certainty.

Cora, Lady Dane, gave up her dreams of happily ever after a long time ago. Now newly widowed, the young mother is determined to finally live on her own terms…until a devastating betrayal shatters her hopes for the future. Faced with the prospect of losing her beloved children to overbearing relatives, Cora needs the help of the one thing she swore she’d never have again: a husband.

Nathaniel Travers hasn’t a care—or responsibility—in the world. Content with his wayward lifestyle, the charismatic rogue has no interest in marriage or duty. That is, until the earl cuts off his bank accounts. No stranger to wild escapades, Nate is game for any scheme that keeps him afloat…even a madcap ruse with a stubborn viscountess.

A fake engagement should be a straightforward solution to both of their dilemmas. But a summer at Cora’s estate tests their arrangement, and it isn’t long before their simmering attraction escalates to a feverish crescendo. When they are forced to confront the real complications of their faux betrothal, Nate has to make the first worthy gamble of his life…if only Cora can risk her guarded heart.

Forever Your Rogue is a swoony, sexy, and heartfelt Regency romance that can be enjoyed as a standalone.

Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World

Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World by William Alexander is $2.99! I mentioned this on a previous Get Rec’d. If you love food history, check this one out!

New York Times bestselling author William Alexander takes readers on the surprisingly twisty journey of the beloved tomato in this fascinating and erudite microhistory.

The tomato gets no respect. Never has. Lost in the dustbin of history for centuries, accused of being vile and poisonous, subjected to being picked hard-green and gassed, even used as a projectile, the poor tomato has become the avatar for our disaffection with industrial foods — while becoming the most popular vegetable in America (and, in fact, the world). Each summer, tomato festivals crop up across the country; the Heinz ketchup bottle, instantly recognizable, has earned a spot in the Smithsonian; and now the tomato is redefining the very nature of farming, moving from fields into climate-controlled mega-greenhouses the size of New England villages.

Supported by meticulous research and told in a lively, accessible voice, Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World seamlessly weaves travel, history, humor, and a little adventure (and misadventure) to follow the tomato’s trail through history. A fascinating story complete with heroes, con artists, conquistadors, and—no surprise—the Mafia, this book is a mouth-watering, informative, and entertaining guide to the food that has captured our hearts for generations.

"Oh, well, you see there's still an on-going investigation! We CAN'T release them!"

The stage was set a few weeks ago when Trumplestiltskin told Bondi to investigate Bill Clinton and the Democrats. So now the files are part of an active, on-going investigation and it could conceivably be argued that they can't be released. At least until the investigation is concluded. Even though in the 20,000 pages that have been released thus far Clinton's name has not appeared.

Regarding the claim that the release of the files will endanger the privacy of victims or other innocent people in the files, the bill that was approved yesterday did address those concerns, so that claim is null. Also, any CSAM or identifying photographs are also redacted, so that's null.

And again, what's Mike Johnson going to do? The bill ordering the documents to be released has no teeth to it. So what, he'll hold members of the government in contempt and order PAM BONDI to prosecute them? Yeah, that'll happen.

What I think would be the likely result is if the Justice Department doesn't release them despite this law passing is that we'll have a Deepthroat event and more tranches of the documents will happen to leak.

We shall see.

I should have included one very important piece of information on the court throwing out the Texas redistricting plan. It was concluded that it was blatantly and baldly illegal on the simple premise that it was racist and racially discriminatory. A very important point.

RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN TEXAS? SAY IT ISN'T SO!

Another point in California's Proposition 50, their redistricting plan to fight Texas' redistricting. The original plan was that it had a trigger - if Texas went through with their plan to redistrict, so would California. From what I read last night in two different sources - neither of which was 100% official but tended towards that way - that trigger was removed in the legislative process before it went to the public vote. So theoretically, if Prop 50 survives court challenges, the redistricting will happen and the count in the house of Democratic seats will go up in California's representation.

Of course, it is widely believed that in next year's mid-term elections that there will be a huge backlash against the incumbent party and the Dems will gain a large number of seats in both chambers. But as that election is over 11 months away, I'm not holding my breath. Too much will happen between now and then, memories are short and there's no telling what the state of the country or the political landscape will be then.

Dating After the End of the World

by Jeneva Rose
October 1, 2025
Mystery/Thriller

Growing up in Wisconsin with a doomsday prepper father, Casey partially credits her dad for her miserable childhood. The rest of it goes to Blake Morrison, a bully who leads the charge of torment through middle and high school.

Now an engaged adult living in Chicago and completing her residency, Casey actively avoids involving her dad in her life. When a mysterious outbreak leads to a zombie apocalypse and Casey’s fiance abandons her in the middle of an assault, she realizes that her dad’s compound is probably the safest place.

Holing up at the compound are various family members and friends, and of course, Casey’s former bully. As far as bully romances go, this is tame for bully-content. There’s no abuse, dub-con, or illegal activity like stalking. The bullying is standard high school name calling. Just a PSA if the bully trope is something you avoid or seek out.

Casey’s dad isn’t about to throw Blake out, so the two of them will have to make do in close quarters.

There’s a lovely sense of community between everyone in the compound. I liked the cast of characters; they all felt like people who cared about and looked out for one another. Those warm and fuzzy moments were often offset by intense action and I think it was a smart way to lure me into a false sense of security. This was a surprisingly tense read, and not the dystopian rom-com I assumed it would be. Dread hangs over the sweet moments; this book will give you a lot of anxiety. These are things I like or don’t typically mind in my books, but I know plenty of readers DO NOT WANT THIS.

There is a lot of emotional inconsistency that bothered me. Casey had no problem holding grudges against her dad and Blake for the better part of a decade, but I think the time and physical distance between them had done enough to warrant adult discussions and soften a bit of the edges of those conflicts. However, she easily forgives her shitty fiance’s reasoning for leaving her to be sexually assaulted and/or die. Girl, let’s be consistent.

In a larger sense, the BIG FEELINGS in this book have poor and/or weak foundations, like Blake’s reasoning for being mean to Casey for most of school. Or the side romance plot between Casey’s cousin Greg and the one night stand he admittedly feels stuck with. I’m trying to avoid spoilers where I can help it!

There’s also a vastly unnecessary cliffhanger and I can’t find any indication if there will be a book two. Like unless Casey is going to find a cure for the zombie outbreak, I didn’t think there was much left to resolve and I would have been happy to live in the fantasy that people on the compound will have an HEA to the best of their abilities.

And if you’re wondering whether Casey’s dad dies because that was my biggest source of reading anxiety…

Show Spoiler
Yes.

Dating After the End of the World is fine. It has moments that work really well to remind me that you have to take the wins and bask in the small joys where you can in a bleak environment. And the romance…well it was technically there. Readers who are sensitive to violence or who would prefer a less fraught reading experience should pass.

In the House of Representatives, the Epstein Files Transparency Act passed almost unanimously, 427 to 1 with Clay Higgins (R-LA) the lone no vote, claiming that it will expose victims. I personally expect their names will be redacted, but I could be wrong. In the Senate, Chuck Schumer called for the bill to be passed by voice acclamation and it passed unanimously. There were five or six non-votes in the House at the conclusion of the vote, I don't know if they were absent or didn't vote.

So the bill has overwhelmingly passed Congress. And now comes the interesting part - it goes to the White House for Trump to sign! If he doesn't sign it, he grossly breaks campaign promises going back years which he could have fulfilled at any time by his command. And he's facing a truly huge veto-proof margin. I would really like to see the blow-back of him not signing it and it going back for an override vote.

But here's another thing. He has blatantly ignored and broken the law so many times during this presidency, ruling by fiat. If he refuses to sign the bill and tells Bondi to not release the files, what's Johnson going to do? Does Mikey have the cajones to hold impeachment proceedings?

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/house-republicans-epstein-files-bill-rebuke-trump_n_69174f28e4b0191be9d4d60c

Jon/Thespian/DisneyDreamer voiced questions as to whether the files could be altered. As it happens, England has their own set of the files. It's possible that other countries also have sets. I expect that as soon as more information is released that they will be meticulously double-checked against other copies.

Second event: TEXAS!

The United States District Court Western District of Texas, El Paso Division, issued a 160 page document to preliminarily enjoin the State of Texas using their redrawn maps, reducing the number of Democratic districts in the U.S. House of Representatives for the upcoming 2026 elections next year. The best part: the judge signing the statement was a Trump appointee! He was joined by an Obama appointee.

Needless to say that this was a preliminary injunction and it will be appealed to the circuit court, and then to the supreme court if it's upheld at the circuit level.

Still, it's a beginning.

I absolutely loved the quote at the beginning of the decision:
“The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”

The person who said that? United States Supreme Court Justice John C. Roberts.

In another blow to the administration, the Indiana legislature stopped their plans to redistrict, I believe their main point being questioning the legality of the action. I'm not sure what this action will hold in regards to California's redistricting as theirs was passed by ballot proposition, of course it is guaranteed that just as the Texas decision will be appealed, the California proposition will be challenged and then endlessly appealed in court.

A chilly day today, but one with a reasonable amount of sunshine at times. I was able to get out for a couple of short walks, and this is a photo from one of them. Unfortunately it's rather steep and the only easy way to get home is to slog back up the hill before going the rest of the way on more-or-less flat roads!

This is part three of my book club notes on A Thousand Beginnings and Endings. [Part one, part two.]

Something I learned in this meeting that I did not previously realize is that a number of the authors in the collection are best known for YA. This does explain why it was shelved under YA in the library, which I have to admit I did not see as significant given that I also had to visit the YA section to find Dracula (because their copy is part of a series of "classic canon" repubs marketed to teens). I had noticed that some of the entries certainly are YA, which I don't consider a bad thing in itself, but in this batch of stories we did experience a disconnect between the marketed-to audience and ourselves.

Bull Moon Rising

Bull Moon Rising by Ruby Dixon is $1.99! This is book one in the Royal Artifactual Guild series. The cover feels very Lisa Frank to me.

In a world of magical artifacts and fantastical beings, a woman determined to save her family joins forces with an unlikely partner, in this steamy romantasy by USA Today bestselling author Ruby Dixon.

As a Holder’s daughter, Aspeth Honori knows the importance of magical artifacts . . . which is why it’s a disaster that her father has gambled all theirs away. Now that her family is in danger of losing their hold—and their heads—if anyone finds out the truth, Aspeth decides to do something about it. She’ll join the Royal Artifactual Guild and the adventurers who explore ancient underground ruins to retrieve the coveted arcane items.

It’s a great plan—with one big problem. The guild won’t let her train because she’s a woman. Aspeth needs a chaperone of some kind. The best way to get around this problem? Marry someone who will let her become an apprentice. Who better than a surly guild member who requires a favor of his own? He’s a minotaur (it’s fine) who is her teacher (also fine) . . . and he’s about to go into rut (which is where it gets tricky). He also has no idea she’s a noble (oops), and he’ll want nothing to do with her if he discovers her real identity.

Now Aspeth just has to pass the guild tests, thwart a fortune hunter, and save her hold—oh, and survive a rut with her monstrous, horned husband, whom she might be falling in love with.

It’s time to dig deep. Literally.

Love and Other Conspiracies

Love and Other Conspiracies by Mallory Marlowe is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a C:

This book was a cute story and I enjoyed the monster-hunting interludes. More of those interludes would have been lovely.

The hardest thing for a paranormal conspiracy theorist and a web series producer to believe in is finding love in this swoony debut romantic comedy.

Hallie Barrett’s life has imploded after she’s dumped by her hotshot ex, who also happens to be her coworker and the star of the online series she was producing. Without a new show to present for the company competition, she’ll be out of a job. But inspiration can come from the strangest places . . . like the most handsome guy she’s ever seen passionately discussing Bigfoot on a late-night docuseries.

Hayden Hargrove made a name for himself as a cryptid expert on his hit podcast, and is intrigued by the plucky, blue-haired producer who offers him the opportunity to lead his own web show. When the production team sees that Hayden’s solo on-screen presence is bad enough to make a ghost blanch, Hallie jumps on camera too, hitting him (and his cryptids) with a healthy dose of skepticism—and enough chemistry to electrify their show to the top of the competition.

As Hayden and Hallie investigate the unknown, they unearth feelings for each other that shake their beliefs to the core. In their search for Mothman, aliens, and the truth, the most elusive discovery might just be learning to love again.

But the heir to Christmas is soon commanded to do his duty: he will marry his best friend, Iris, the Easter Princess and his brother’s not-so-secret crush. A situation that has disaster written all over it.

Things go from bad to worse when a rival arrives to challenge Coal for the princess’s hand…and Coal comes face-to-face with his mysterious behind-the-bar hottie: Hex, the Prince of Halloween.

The Gentleman’s Book of Vices

RECOMMENDED: The Gentleman’s Book of Vices by Jess Everlee is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this and gave it a B+:

The world feels solid and lived in, the characters feel genuine, and as a result, I had all the feels. If the test of a good romance is whether I root for a couple and believe in their success, then the answer to this one is very much yes!

Is their real-life love story doomed to be a tragedy, or can they rewrite the ending?

London, 1883

Finely dressed and finely drunk, Charlie Price is a man dedicated to his vices. Chief among them is his explicit novel collection, though his impending marriage to a woman he can’t love will force his carefully curated collection into hiding.

Before it does, Charlie is determined to have one last hurrah: meeting his favorite author in person.

Miles Montague is more gifted as a smut writer than a shopkeep and uses his royalties to keep his flagging bookstore afloat. So when a cheerful dandy appears out of the mist with Miles’s highly secret pen name on his pretty lips, Miles assumes the worst. But Charlie Price is no blackmailer; he’s Miles’s biggest fan.

A scribbled signature on a worn book page sets off an affair as scorching as anything Miles has ever written. But Miles is clinging to a troubled past, while Charlie’s future has spun entirely out of his control…
