Yes, it's time again for the Annual Weeding of the Psmith Bookshelves, and the subsequent search to get them adopted into good and loving homes. It's a long list this year (I was very firm with myself), but the rules haven't changed: if you want one or two or six or ten, just comment to this post listing which ones you want. I'll box them up and ship them.
You don't need to do anything in return, but if you want to, please give to one of the following excellent causes: Planned Parenthood (people), the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (animals), or the Kansas Rural Center (sustainable agriculture).
Format (hardcover hc or pb) is given in the list. Unless otherwise noted, all are in very good condition. If you want to know more about any of them, just ask :)

Date: 2014-12-08 09:12 am (UTC)Just curious - how did you find the German cookbook? I was always wondering what people in other countries would put into one of those. I always imagine it's dishes that even my grandmother only cooked occasionally but I could be totally wrong!

Date: 2014-12-08 02:12 pm (UTC)The German cookbook (you can see it here on Amazon) was given to me by elderly gentleman for whom I do book searches and act as sort of an email intermediary (he doesn't "do" computers). It's a lovely book but the recipes are fairly meat-heavy, and being a vegetarian there's not a whole lot in there for me. Each section focuses on one region, though, so that aspect was interesting. One Amazon reviewer called it more "a compendium of food culture" than a cookbook, and I think that's accurate.

Date: 2014-12-09 12:32 pm (UTC)Sadly, vegetarian traditional food is underrepresented and/or forgotten because it used to be poor people's food and the last few generations didn't want to be seen eating that! (Or were sick of it because they never got anything else while growing up.)
I am in the midst of making an "eternal" meal plan. Basically a 12 week meal plan that repeats itself about four times a year.
Too often I find myself tired and hungry at the end of the day and end up making some sort of pasta just because I actually have all the ingredients and the kids will like it. Hopefully, next year will be much more varied thanks to planning!
Do you eat eggs?
I'd recommend Mustard Eggs with boiled potatoes or Spinach, Potatoes and Fried Eggs as something typical German, then :)OR! I nearly forgot! One of my favourites as a kid: Stewed sweet and sour cucumbers with potatoes (no German traditional food without potatoes). I also like Onions in honey butter. Nice side dish for Christmas.
If you are happy to post to the UK, I'd love to claim those, if still available:
- The town that forgot how to breathe by Kenneth Harvey (pb)
- The kingdom of little wounds by Susann Cokal (hc)
- No blade of grass by John Christopher (pb, obv used)
- The last man Vol. 1 by Vaughan and Guerra (hc) - post-apoc graphic novel
Thank you so much!
Please tell me if you'd like a Christmas Card!
