I must say, I am not ready. 'Inglorious Basterds' is probably as far as I can go with this. But I am from a resistance family and my grandfather´s nightmares of how he was tortured are still ringing in my ears. The average German might be ready, I don´t know.

Did you ever read my story 'Pape Str.'? Writing it all down finally took some of that lingering darkness away.

Wow. Yes, I can see your point. And yet, ridiculing evil is a time-honored way of cutting it down to size; perhaps one could think of the movie as a sort of giant "Riddikulus" spell? I haven't seen Inglourious Basterds yet but just last night Spouse was saying we should see it. Netflix, here I come... Is there a URL for the story?

Hm, maybe. That´s an interesting way to look at it. I felt like this about 'Inglorious Basterds' (a movie rather than a film about the Third Reich).

Merciful Zeus. It's almost enough to make me wish I were a Christian, just so that I could believe in a special hell for some people. I can see why it was cathartic to write. I read a lot of WWII history and stories like this are harrowing but (I think) so important. They carry so many crucial lessons: about not closing your eyes to evil, yes, but also about the desperate danger inherent in marginalizing or demonizing a subgroup of people. Once you convince yourself that another group of people is less than human, you can do anything to them with a clear conscience. And that's the most horrifying thing of all...

You know what? There was only one guard of that specific place that could be identified after the war and his file was "lost".

Right.

Unfortunately, we were not very good at replacing all the Nazi bureaucrats after the war and that did have consequences...
